Welcome from the President & CEO.
Hi,
and welcome to Emeryville!
We invite you to explore
Emeryville with the aid of
www.emeryvillechamber.com.
The information contained here will provide you with the information
you'll need to enjoy all our unique city has to offer.
Emeryville is a city
with a long and colorful history that has gone through several
transformations. In the early days of the 20th Century Emeryville
was a meat processing center and home for hundreds of
slaughterhouses, butcher shops, and meat processing plants. In the
1920's the City was known as the "Entertainment Center of the East
Bay," replete with saloons, speakeasies, gambling halls and race
tracks. The famed Oakland Oaks, one of the old Pacific Coast
League's original franchises, played their home games at Oaks Park -
in Emeryville. The legendary 1948 championship team was managed by
Casey Stengel and featured another future Yankee manager, the young
Billy Martin, at second base.
In the post-WWII era
Emeryville was an industrial town, with steel mills, paint
factories, and other heavy industries giving the city a distinct
manufacturing flavor. Many captains of East Bay industry emerged
from these businesses, forming the influential Emeryville Industries
Association.
Today, Emeryville is a
customer and tourist-oriented city known for its great shopping,
hotels, dining, educational and entertainment venues, and the
international headquarters for the emerging biofuel technology
industry. We are proud to be the site of some of America's
best-known businesses. Pixar Animation Studios, Novartis, Peet's
Coffee and Tea, IKEA, Leapfrog, Ex'pression College for Digital
Arts, Trader Vic's Restaurant, Jamba Juice, and the Oaks Card Club,
among many others, all call Emeryville home, or have extensive
operations here.
Emeryville's terrific
location, at the foot of the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge,
minutes from the U.C. - Berkeley campus and the Port of Oakland and
adjacent to four major state and interstate highways, make us an
affordable, fun, accessible and colorful city for visitors,
residents and businesses.
So whether you're a
visitor out of the area, a local shopper, a U.C. student, a family
moving to the East Bay, attending a convention or meeting or just
here for the day on business, we welcome you. (Emeryville's four
full-service hotels offer almost 1,000 rooms). Always feel free to
contact us at the Chamber office if there is anything we can do to
make your stay more enjoyable.
